iPhone 6 and custom Apple Pay kiosks

A recent article in the Telegraph states that a joint venture between mobile operators meant to grab them a slice of the payments industry via smartphone ‘wave and pay’ services has been drastically scaled back.

The reason behind this move? It’s all thanks to the new iPhone 6. Whilst Android users have been able to make use of Near Field Communication / contactless card readers for some time, Apple have only just joined the NFC party. And it looks like that party is about to get much bigger.

However in a recent email to Cult of Mac, an Apple spokeswoman has confirmed that the NFC chip on the iPhone 6 (and the iPhone 6 plus) is only for use with Apple Pay.

Whether Apple will restrict developers from making use of the new NFC function in the coming months will remain to be seen. But with Apple having confirmed a NFC chip in its latest must-have phone, this does finally mean that the vast majority of new smartphones are now NFC enabled in some way.

Where as Google wallet failed to take off, Apple Pay looks like it could become an extremely popular way to make mobile payments. To quote Mashable, “Apple Pay could potentially kick-start the mobile payment business the way the iPod and iTunes launched mobile music 13 years ago. Once again, Apple is leveraging its powerful brand image to bring disparate companies together all in the name of consumer convenience.”

As a result we expect to see a large increase in our E.POS and M.POS (Mobile Point-Of-Sale) inquiries from our clients. imageHOLDERS’ range of multi-device kiosks have been specifically engineered to hold your choice of mobile, tablets, phablets and scanners with custom options allowing printers and integrated NFC/RFID technology.
